New Super Duper elevates burgers to a higher level

December 2011

America’s love affair with the hamburger is far from over, but our tastes have definitely become more refined. Baby boomers who cut their teeth on Whoppers and Big Macs have moved on to more upscale burgers.

Ironically, the new Super Duper Burgers on Chestnut replaces a former burger spot, Johnny Rockets. And while Super Duper states on its website that it serves “fast-food style burgers,” and the menu reads like a fast-food joint, you won’t find 100 percent Niman Ranch all-natural ground beef at Mickey D’s. The Marina restaurant is the third Super Duper to open in The City; the two others are both on Market Street (the first location outside San Francisco will open in Mill Valley soon).

In addition to premium beef, owner Adriano Paganini (of Beretta and Starbelly) uses organic Strauss Dairy cream for shakes and soft-serve ice cream, and he has developed his own super-secret “super sauce.” All of the packaging used is compostable, and even the pickles are house-made.

Super Duper’s menu is straightforward: beef, chicken and veggie sandwiches with a choice of toppings, along with fries, salads, drinks, shakes, and ice cream. Free burger fixings include lettuce, tomato, red onions, super sauce, jalapeno peppers, grilled onions, and pickles. Additional toppings such as bacon, cheese, avocado, an organic egg, grilled peppers, roasted portobello mushroom, and cambozola blue cheese run from 50 cents to a dollar each. Extras for the free-range natural chicken breast sandwich include chipotle aioli, jack cheese and bacon, and you can top your veggie burger with humus, cheese or avocado; jack or avocado can also be added to a Portobello sandwich. Fries and garlic fries – made with fresh garlic and aged cheddar – come with a choice of super sauce, house-made mayo, or chipotle dipping sauce.

Salads at Super Duper are not the highlight of the menu. Essentially, you can add a beef, portobello, or veggie burger and toppings to a basic green salad with Caesar dressing. But the basic shakes (chocolate or vanilla) and “super” shakes (cookies and cream; chocolate and fresh strawberries; or double chocolate and chips) are rich and delicious, as are the vanilla and chocolate soft-serve ice cream cones. You can also order a malt, regular or “spiked.” Drinks include sodas, organic iced tea, resh lemonade, and a selection of wine and beer on tap. Feed that fast-food craving with a better burger and give Super Duper a try. For night owls with rumbling tummies, note that on Fridays and Saturdays, Super Duper on Chestnut is open till 3 a.m.!
