City’s AIRBNB Hosts Take Tax Hit

San Francisco is stepping up its regulatory engagement with the short-term rental industry, letting it be known that short-term rentals must itemize and be subject to tax on all business-related personal property. That would include furniture, sheets, dishes, and other items in the home.

The tax will be a little more than 1 percent of the item’s value, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, which quoted Assessor-Recorder Carmen Chu: “We have heard loud and clear from [hosts] that they want to be treated like everybody else and are willing to pay taxes like everybody else. … They are operating their homes as a business, and so we are treating them as we would any other business.”Airbnb called it an “invasion of privacy.”
