An attempt to bestow the name of Rose Pak on the Central Subway’s Chinatown station has hit some bumps in recent months. District 3 Supervisor Aaron Peskin has proposed the naming in honor of the late community and political power broker, but the first hurdle was San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency policy that stations should be named after geographic locations. Peskin responded in late April by introducing a compromise nonbinding resolution that the station be named Rose Pak Chinatown Station.
Peskin said it was “appropriate to honor the community’s desire to see the station named after Central Subway’s biggest advocate, Rose Pak, who advocated at every level of government to bring Central Subway to Chinatown.”
Pak, who supported Peskin’s return to the Board of Supervisors after she opposed then-Mayor Ed Lee’s pick for the District 3 seat, had a long career as a community organizer and as a political broker. She was a hero to some and a villain to others, including a crowd of opponents who protested outside City Hall in early May. Some of those protestors accused her of being corrupt and an agent of Communist China.
On an online San Francisco Examiner article about the controversy, one reader commented, “What? It’s not going to be the Salesforce Central Subway?”
