At the end of September, Mayor London Breed issued a 60-day extension of San Francisco’s moratorium on commercial evictions. The moratorium now runs though Nov. 30, 2020. The move followed an executive order signed by Gavin Newsom that allowed local jurisdictions to take such actions.
As a result, evictions for late rent payments due from March 17 through Nov. 30 are prohibited on commercial properties. Tenants will still be on the hook to pay the missed rent, and landlords are able to seek a waiver from the moratorium based on “significant financial hardship, such as default on debt or similar enforceable obligation,” according to the mayor’s office, which encourages tenants and landlords to work out repayment plans.
The extension was supported by District 3 Supervisor Aaron Peskin, who said, “For me and my colleagues who are fighting to revive our neighborhood commercial corridors, we now have some breathing room to ensure that everyone recovers.”
