Learning About The Gifts In The ’12 Days Of Christmas’

There are many theories as to the origins of “The 12 Days of Christmas.” One theory is that it comes from a Germanic New Year celebration called “Yule”, which also included themes of giving and similarly long lists of gifts. Another theory is that it originates from the Victorian era, when servants would give their masters tokens of appreciation on the “12 days following Christmas”—hence the song. A final theory suggests that the “12 Days Of Christmas” has its origins in Christianity, specifically in reference to the three Wise Men or Magi who gave gifts to Jesus (the “newborn king” mentioned in the lyrics). That said, no matter where its origins lie, what exactly are these gifts in “The 12 Days of Christmas?”
