According to the National Bike Registry, bicycle theft is up 10 percent nationwide. Not all thefts are reported to the police, so exact numbers are unavailable, but the San Francisco Bay Guardian recently estimated that 2,000 to 3,000 bicycles are stolen every year in San Francisco.
To address this problem, the San Francisco Police Department, San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, S.F. Safe, Google, and Valencia Cyclery are co-hosting a workshop on Dec. 10 to teach cyclists how to help prevent bicycle theft. Sessions include:
- The San Francisco Police Department Station Investigations Team will discuss how bike theft is investigated.
- S.F. Safe will discuss garage door security.
- Bert Hill, chair of the San Francisco Bicycle Safety Committee for the Board of Supervisors, will speak on protecting your bicycle from theft.
- Bike techs from Valencia Cyclery will demonstrate how to correctly lock your bicycle on the street to deter theft and the type of locks a bicyclist should use.
- The National Bike Registry will be at the workshop to offer registry services.
This event is free and open to the public, and will take place at 6 p.m., Dec. 10, at the Google campus, 345 Spear Street, San Francisco. Valet bike parking will be provided. For more information, visit www.missionstation.org.
