What wines we’re drinking this season

When the weather can’t decide between winter and spring, white Rhones are the wine equivalent of the lightweight springtime coat that suits your mood and the hint of approaching warmth to come. After several consecutive months of heavy spending through the holidays and Valentine’s Day, these wines are also warm and kind to your pocketbook. Most can be found under $30 (though as always, there are splurge-worthy bottles out there that are substantially above that range). White Rhône wine varietals include Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Roussane, and Marsanne, and the best examples are pleasantly aromatic with hints of apricot, hazelnuts, Asian spices, and licorice. Try the 2011 Château de Montfaucon Côtes du Rhone Blanc ($18) or the 2011 Montirius Vacqueyras Blanc ($25). If you prefer the New World interpretation, check out the 2010 Tablas Creek Côtes de Tablas Blanc from Paso Robles ($25). These versatile whites pair happily with grilled pork chops, roast chicken, lobster rolls, Caesar salad, and most cheeses.
